Hey Whats up,
Today is Wednesday and every wednesday I address an awesome question from one of my subscribers...to get your question answered either reply back with it, post it on my facebook or tweet (or DM) @joecarabase.
This week's question comes from Seattle:
Hey man...I've been training for about 8 years now pretty consistently but never take dedicated time off. In one of your emails you said you should do so every 6 months?? I'm afraid I'd lose muscle also do you use the same diet as always???
Thanks- By the way your email is the only one I read daily im impressed that I keep learning new tips even after all my own experience - keep it coming!! Also just wanted to let you know I was hesitant at first to share your emails and videos. I felt like it was weird but I've been posting your videos from youtube my Facebook and have forwarded last week's email to my friends on my email list. Your welcome! lol
Mike
Mike, I appreciate you sharing my stuff - it means a lot! Referrals in my business are crucial for growth as there are a ton of other people trying to do what I do so a BIG THANKS to all of you who share my emails & videos with your friends...it truly means a lot.
I'm going to break the email into two parts to best answer each point...
Will you lose muscle (or get out of shape) from taking a week off?
I've got to stress first that you are only entitled to a recovery week if you consistently train hard for three or more days a week, over a 6 month (or greater) period of time. If you are still working on your consistency, focus on getting your workouts in regularly before thinking about taking time off.
Assuming you work out hard and on the regular, you will NOT lose muscle or get out of shape if you plan your recovery week. If you become sedentary and eat whatever, you'll have problems. But if you follow a plan like the one I'm going to give you next week, you'll actually see a bigger difference taking a week off v.s a normal week of training.
Just as your skills in your job wouldn't disappear after taking a week off for vacation, your muscles will not diminish either. Muscle memory will ensures that you will not lose strength or forget how to perform specific movements after taking a short time off. There's documentation that you could get away with a month but I think that is BS and would not recommend you try it.
Do you use the same diet (or eating plan) when you take a week off?
No...I was going to email you on this over the next week but in short your digestive system needs a recovery period, just like your body. If you follow my nutrition philosophy (outlined here) that has proven to help people eat healthy consistently while still enjoying their favorite foods, your digestive tract needs a break.
Lean proteins and healthy fats are great to eat, they require a lot of work to metabolize, digest and eliminate. The awesome benefit of burning calories just from the aforementioned body processes is the same as the awesome benefits from intense workouts but in both cases a recovery time is needed to regenerate and boost your vitality.
I'm not saying you should fast (or not eat) for the entire week or at least in the traditional sense but you MUST consider the following:
-Decreasing your total caloric input: As your caloric expenditure will be much less, you will not need as many calories.
-Eat foods that are mostly water and full of nutrients. I'll share more about this over the next week.
Thanks for the question Mike and to all of the other questions that were submitted. I'm humbled for all the interest and enjoy reading everything even though I can not respond to all of them.
#vitality
