Ap Verheggen calls this contraption his Desert Twins.
Verheggen is an artist and he says he was inspired to create these 'sculptures' after watching the moon landings many years ago.
Verheggen has also created a water making system, powered by solar panels.
He explains how it works: "This system works by the solar energy. The sun reflects on the solar panel and produces the energy, the energy is going to a cooling pump below the sculpture, it starts to pump liquid, the white metal becomes very cold, air is sucked in the box and moisture in the air is condensed to the white metal, it drips off and it is collected in the container."
The artist is hoping to pursue his invention further after putting the system through its paces in the desert in Mali.
Verheggen joined a Dutch peacekeeping mission, setting up his simple solar powered condensation system in Gao which lies inside the Sahara Desert.
Despite the hot and dry conditions, tests on the system showed it could function and produced up to eight litres of water over a 24 hour period.
The system is simple, relying on solar power to cool air which condenses.
However, there were obstacles during the test run.
During the five days of tests there were problems protecting the solar panels, stopping the system from overheating and trying out different cooling liquids.
Verheggen says: "This is the first step in probably a new kind of technology to help people in water drought affected areas. So, it is not a matter of talking about the finances, or what are the costs, but what can I say is that we pay for this project by ourselves, so we are forced to use a cheap and reliable equipment, so that's also the outcome."
General Tom Middendorp, the Netherlands Chief of Defence personally approved the watermaker mission test in Mali.
He says: "This kind of project can help us (United Nations' peace mission personnel) to become less of the burden on the (local) population with regard to water and also to be more helpful to them, help them solve one of the main causes of conflict in those areas. If they don't have to fight over the water, a part of the problem is solved."
This is not the only system Vergeggen is experimenting with.
He's created the smaller, though less efficient system DC03 which can produce one glass of water over 24 hours.
Ap Verheggen created DC03 as a free open source project hoping universities around the world will create a better, more efficient versions of his project.
It's already drawn the interest of Dr. Patrick Huntjens, an expert on water and climate related challenges at The Hague Institute for Global Justice.
Huntjens says: "This unit also needs to be optimized, because both are prototypes, to produce more water. But for drip irrigation in agricultural areas, this solution may also provide a major contribution, because it barely takes energy, but nevertheless, it provides water to plants which are able to survive in extreme circumstances."
